NUALA MULLIGAN is a British Contemporary Aritst whose work draws upon iconic imagery to create bold, statement, eye-catching artwork.
Nuala uses a mix of traditional and innovative printmaking techniques and materials to create her much loved, statement pieces.
Nuala studied Fine Art Mixed Media at the University of Westminster where, she says, "it was great to be an art student, to be given a studio and to be able to create work all day." It was while studying that Nuala discovered her interest in how materials can be manipulated in order to strengthen an image.
Nuala is rather poetic in the way that she talks about her work. She has a real passion for her tools and process, explaining perhaps the very technical, experimental route she has chosen to create her latest collections.
Nuala's early work evolved as a collection of silkscreen prints celebrating icons in pop culture.
First, Nuala chooses the image she would like to work with. Then, it’s deciding which part of the image is going to be played with, which colour will be applied and which colours will complement one another. Once printed, the colour is layered and, finally, a black gloss screen is applied.
Screen printing, she says “is about what you can hide in the dark and bring out in the light” Nuala loves being in the workshop: putting on her overalls; getting her materials out; using pressure; pushing and pulling to create a piece of work.
Nuala's lenticulars cross the barrier between a print and the moving image.
This is a very involved and specialist process that enables the art to change as the viewer moves side to side, the image resting in the balance beteen the viewer's left and right eyes. The image is never stable, two people looking at one of Nuala's lenticular's may see two seperate images at the same time.
In Nuala's lenticular pieces she takes two images of her chosen subject matter and combines them to convey her chosen message. For instance in 'The Show Must Go On' we see the showman Freddie Mercury juxtaposed against the man Freddie Mercury - Freddie described himself 'The Great Pretender', and in this piece Nuala shows us the man behind the facade.
Adding that final shimmer to an original silkscreen print that guarantees heads will turn.
It's this diamond dust that adds a glistening quality to all of Nuala's screenprints. The use of diamond dust, made famous by artists like Warhol, makes the finished artwork shimmer creating a depth in the piece as the light hits it without which it would be a much flatter final piece. A beautiful finish, for a beautiful subject matter.
